Blown-In Insulation Edmonton

Blown-in is sold by R-value, and R-value only exists at full, uncompressed depth. With winters this long, the gap between the number quoted and the depth installed is expensive.

Depth Is the Whole Product

Alberta asks more of an attic than almost any climate in this fleet, because the temperature difference across the ceiling runs for months at a stretch. Material installed shallow, or installed correctly and since settled, gives up a proportion of its rated value, and here that proportion costs real money every heating season. We measure what is actually up there before quoting and measure again at completion.

Settling Is Normal and It Is Priced In or It Is Not

Loose-fill compacts over time. Cellulose settles more than blown fiberglass, which is why it is installed above the target depth rather than level with it, so the settled depth is the rated depth. A contractor who fills to the finished number on day one is selling an attic that will be under specification within a couple of seasons, and in this climate you will feel the difference.

Air Sealing Comes First, Every Time

Blown-in sits on the ceiling plane and does nothing to stop air passing through it. If the ceiling leaks at pot lights, top plates, plumbing chases and the attic hatch, warm indoor air moves straight through the fibres regardless of depth — and in an Edmonton winter that is also how moisture reaches cold roof sheathing. Sealing those paths first is what makes the depth mean anything.

Why It Matters for Frost and Ice Damming

Warm moist air escaping into a cold attic condenses and freezes on the underside of the sheathing. Come a thaw, that frost melts and shows up as what looks like a roof leak. Depth alone does not prevent it because depth does not stop air. Insulation and air sealing together are what keep the attic cold and dry enough for the problem not to start.

Questions

Common questions

Is blown-in enough on its own in Edmonton?

It insulates but does not air seal. In this climate the air sealing underneath is what decides whether the depth does its job.

Can you add over what is already up there?

Often yes, if the existing material is dry, clean and not compacted. Damp or contaminated material comes out first.

What causes frost in my attic?

Warm moist indoor air escaping through an unsealed ceiling and freezing on the cold roof sheathing. More insulation alone does not stop it.
