Fiberglass Insulation Edmonton

Most of the fiberglass we find underperforming was not the wrong product. It was compressed, gapped around wiring, or stopped short at the eaves where it mattered most.

Installation Quality Decides the Result

A batt reaches its rated R-value only when it fills the cavity edge to edge at full loft, cut around obstructions rather than crushed past them. Stuffed behind a wire, squashed by a cross brace or left with a finger gap at the stud, it gives up a large share of its rating. At minus thirty that shortfall is not academic, it is the difference you feel standing in the room.

Where Fiberglass Is the Right Call

It is a sound, economical choice in a simple well-vented attic and in cavities with easy uninterrupted access. It does not air seal, and in this climate air movement carries moisture to cold surfaces as well as carrying heat away, so where that is the fault we will say foam is the better spend rather than selling you the cheaper line.

The Vapour Side of the Question

In a heating-dominated climate the vapour drive runs outward for most of the year, which is why assemblies here are built to control moisture from the warm side. Fiberglass does nothing about vapour on its own; it relies entirely on the rest of the assembly doing that job. Knowing which element is handling vapour is part of quoting the work honestly.

Batts, Blown Fiberglass and Cellulose

Batts suit open regular framing. Blown fiberglass suits an attic floor with irregular joist spacing and adds almost no load to the ceiling. Cellulose is denser and resists air movement better but holds water more readily, which matters where frost accumulation has been an issue. The assembly and the moisture history decide, not a preference.

Questions

Common questions

Is fiberglass worse than spray foam?

It is different. Fiberglass slows heat transfer but does not stop air movement, and air movement is the fault in most underperforming buildings here.

Can batts go over existing insulation?

Sometimes, if what is there is dry and uncompacted. Laying new material over damp insulation traps the problem.

Why is my insulated attic still cold?

Usually because the ceiling below was never air sealed, so warm air moves straight through the material regardless of depth.
